How the numbers work
- Backers needed = goal ÷ average pledge.
- Followers needed to fund = backers needed ÷ follower conversion rate. This assumes followers alone fund the project, which is the safe way to plan.
- Followers for your day-1 target = (goal × day-1 share) ÷ (average pledge × conversion rate).
- Projected funding = (followers × follower conversion + email subscribers × email conversion) × average pledge.
Treat the result as a range, not a promise. Conversion rates swing a lot depending on where followers came from: people who found you through playtests, demos and communities back far more often than people who followed to enter a giveaway.
How to grow prelaunch followers
- Get the Kickstarter prelaunch page up at least a month before launch, and put the link everywhere: social bios, email footer, demo files, convention handouts.
- Give people a reason to follow now: show the game or product in action, share playtest stories, post art progress.
- Build your own email list alongside it. You own that list, and you can email it on launch morning.
- If the number isn't growing week to week, moving the launch date is cheaper than launching to silence.
Prelaunch questions
How many prelaunch followers do I need on Kickstarter?
Divide your backers needed by your expected conversion rate. With a $15,000 goal, a $60 average pledge and 20% conversion, that's 250 backers ÷ 0.2 = 1,250 followers to fund from followers alone. Aim higher if most of your followers came from ads or giveaways.
What percentage of prelaunch followers back a Kickstarter?
Reported averages run from about 20–25% (BackerKit) to 31% (a Kickstarter staffer, quoted second-hand). Low-quality followers from ads or giveaways can convert at 2–5%. Use 20% to plan, and your own early numbers once you have them.
When should I launch my prelaunch page?
Kickstarter recommends having it live for at least a month before launch. Many creators run it for several months while they build their audience.
Do email subscribers count as much as followers?
Usually less per person: estimates run 1–5% of an email list backing, compared with about 20% of prelaunch followers. But you control your email list and can contact it directly on launch day, so it's well worth building both.
Why does day 1 matter so much?
Campaigns typically raise around a quarter to a third of their total on the first day. Funding early builds momentum and makes the project more visible on Kickstarter, which brings in backers you didn't reach yourself.
Where these numbers come from
- 31% follower conversion (a Kickstarter staffer, quoted second-hand): ComixTribe, Going all in on pre-launch
- 20–25% follower conversion and 1–5% email conversion: BackerKit (a vendor), so treat these as estimates
- Prelaunch page live at least a month before launch: Kickstarter, How to maximize pre-launch sign-ups
- Day-1 share of about 25–30%: Kickstarter staff (second-hand) and EN World campaign data; treat it as an estimate
- A real low-conversion case (237 followers, 9 backers): Indie Hackers
Checked October 2026. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.
